What makes dalgona coffee different?

Dalgona coffee or simply, whipped coffee, first started to become popular in South Korea. According to some, this coffee beverage was based on a traditional South Korean snack made of caramelized sugar. This snack resembles the taste of dalgona coffee: sweet and milky with a coffee punch.

Dalgona coffee is basically made of iced milk topped with whipped coffee. The whipped coffee on top makes dalgona coffee different because it maintains its shape and stays whipped longer than other foam based coffees.

To level up this trending dalgona coffee, the recipe I’m sharing with you today also calls for French Vanilla syrup. It’s sweeter, creamier, and more delicious, you’ll crave a cup of this coffee every day!

What makes dalgona coffee fluffy?

Dalgona coffee’s main feature is its fluffy and velvety topping, and because of this, this drink is also commonly called “fluffy coffee” and “frothy coffee”.

Making this fluffy topping is easier than you can imagine. You just have to whip hot water, sugar, and instant coffee until they form soft peaks and reach a meringue-like texture. Of course, if you want to do it effortlessly and more quickly, use a hand or stand mixer instead of a whisk.

Sugar and instant coffee are two important ingredients to make this recipe’s unique whipped coffee topping. The instant coffee is responsible for making the foam while the sugar helps the coffee maintain its whipped form.

Can you make dalgona coffee with regular coffee?

Dalgona coffee calls for instant coffee rather than ground coffee. However, if you are a coffee lover who’s not really a fan of instant coffee, worry not. You can also whip up your dalgona coffee using espresso or strong coffee

However, if you’re going to use espresso or strong coffee, it’s important to make sure that you are using equal amounts of coffee and sugar. Plus, you should also be extra patient when whipping as the process can be a little longer than usual.

The result might not also be as fluffy as compared with the recipe using instant coffee but you should be able to enjoy its meringue-like texture too.
