Which is better? Dried or canned garbanzo beans?
Canned chickpeas are highly-recommended when you don’t have much time to cook. You only need to open the can and rinse them, and you’re good to go. Plus, canned chickpeas are also highly recommended if you’re making spreads and hummus because they are much easier to break down.
On the other hand, many still prefer using dried garbanzo beans, although they’re a bit demanding to prepare. They need to be soaked overnight and cooked for several minutes (cooking time varies depending on the cooking method and how long the beans were soaked).
Dried garbanzo beans remain the best choice because they are much cheaper and they have a much more natural taste. However, if you’re really in a rush and you want to enjoy these delicious recipes in a pinch, there’s no harm in using canned chickpeas.
How to cook dried garbanzo beans?
If you choose to use dried garbanzo beans to make this recipe, it’s best to soak them in cold water overnight for up to 12 hours before cooking. The longer you soak the beans, the faster they will cook.
After soaking, you can cook the chickpeas in a pressure cooker, slow cooker, or simply on the stovetop. Wherever you choose to cook them, make sure that the water you’ll use will be twice the amount of chickpeas you’re using.
The best way to know if your chickpeas are good to go is to give them a taste test. If you want them to be a little tender or the recipe requires a softer texture then you can let them simmer for a few extra minutes.
Cooked garbanzo beans can last in the fridge for three days, but you can also freeze them in an airtight container, and they will be good for about a month.
