When should glaze be put on ham?

You can make the glaze days before you plan to cook your ham. Most glaze for ham recipes uses ingredients such as sugar, honey, barbeque sauce, marmalade, and other spices which all have long shelf lives.

You can glaze your ham as much as you want but you should remember NOT to glaze it right away. Chances are, if you put your glaze too early, you’ll only end up burning it.

It’s highly suggested to apply glaze on the ham 15 to 30 minutes before you take it out of the oven. For every 5 to 10 pounds of ham, you’ll most likely need at least a cup of glaze.

Some items I like when making ham glaze recipes include silicone whisks, glass mixing bowls to prevent sticking and messy cleanup, and some measuring spoons.

You can also make sure to have a small sauce pan and some silicone spoons on hand. They make cooking the glazes really easy and the glaze won’t stick to your silicone spoons which makes them great for stirring but also serving the glaze!

How to glaze ham?

Glazing is the finishing touch necessary to complete your wonderful Christmas ham. But before anything else, you should take note of scoring your ham before glazing it.

Scoring or making shallow cuts in the ham will allow the glaze to seep in. But of course, scoring is not necessary for spiral-cut hams.

To glaze your ham, take it out of the oven and put it on a cooling rack. Use a basting brush or pour the glaze over the ham and reglaze it again several times if you want your ham to have a nice caramelized surface.

Continue baking until the ham reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees. Don’t go past this temperature because you’ll end up with dry ham. Once done, allow the ham to sit for at least 20 minutes before serving.
